Paraphrasing & Citing Sources
Paraphrasing is...
Rewriting the text IN YOUR OWN WORDS and OWN WRITING STYLE!
1. Read the source carefully - You can't use what you don't understand!
2. Choose a paragraph to paraphrase, NOT the entire source.
3. Set the source aside. Don't look at the original while rewriting.

- Reword – Replace words and phrases with synonyms whenever you can.
- Rearrange – Rearrange words within sentences to make new sentences. You can even rearrange the ideas presented within the paragraph.
- Realize that some words and phrases cannot be changed – names, dates, titles, etc. cannot be replaced, but you can present them differently in your paraphrase.
- Recheck – Make sure that your paraphrase conveys the same meaning as the original text.
Let's Practice:
1. Pairs Answer Questions & Paraphrase Activity!
What did you do this past weekend?
Where would you go and what would you do on your dream vacation?
2. Whole Group Practice
EXAMPLE:
Original source: “VINELAND, N.J. (AP) — Police in New Jersey say a man told officers he fled the scene of an auto accident because he ‘didn’t want to deal with his girlfriend yelling at him.’”
Incorrect: New Jersey police state a man said he left the scene of a car accident because he didn’t want to deal with his girlfriend yelling at him.
The paraphrase only changes a few words. Most of the words and sentence structure are too close to the original for this to be a good paraphrase.
Correct: A man in New Jersey seemed to think leaving the scene of a car crash and being arrested was a better option than listening to his girlfriend yell. He told the police he fled because he didn’t want to listen to her yell at him.

PRACTICE TOGETHER:
"For the second time in five seasons, the entire state of Wisconsin hinges on a single broken collarbone. One thousand four hundred forty-four days after Aaron Rodgers broke his collarbone on Monday Night Football in a 2013 loss to the Bears, the Packers' future Hall of Fame quarterback suffered the same injury to his other clavicle in a brutal loss to the Vikings on Sunday afternoon". http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/page/Barnwellx171016/layers-aaron-rodgers-collarbone-injury-whether-green-bay-packers-hang-make-2017-nfl-playoffs-nfc-north
